Well this is me. My name is Michael Douglas (no, not that one).
I’m a Scot who has lived in Dover on the south coast of England for over 40 years.
I’m not sure when my obsession with Shakespeare started, but it was all about his words before the history of his image.
Anyone who can write this sort of stuff should be remembered forever:
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.”
We should not forget that in his time Shakespeare was not high brow – his plays were watched by ordinary people, and the words that we now find opaque were readily understood by the audience because it was their everyday language.
The passage above (which is from Macbeth) is of course easy for us as the words are still familiar now.
